Update on the Transform Now Plowshares

Michael R Walli, Sr Megan Rice, and Greg Boertje-Obed of the Transform Now Plowshares. taken from their website.

So for those of you who missed my original post back in August, these three peace activists broke into the Y12 nuclear weapons production plant in Oak Ridge Tennessee last July and put up signs for peace and poured blood in front of the factory. There’s a whole Website devoted to them here. These three are part of the Plowshares movement, a group of non-violent protesters who take literally the Biblical admonition of Isaiah to ‘Turn Swords Into Plowshares’. The first ever Plowshares action was in 1980. There’s a short slide presentation here showing all the actions since then.

The three protesters here were finally charged with a full indictment including two felony charges and a misdemeanor charge for each. And they’ve written some recommendations to the court about whether the US should continue to have nuclear weapons.

There’s more on the subject at the website for the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance. Remember all those nuclear weapons we built during the Cold War–the ones we didn’t junk as part of the START treaties? Over 5,000 warheads in various incarnations? Well, here’s a jobs program–we’re going to modernize the whole lot of them! Billions of dollars to build things that we hopefully will never use, because Tennessee needs good Jobs! </sarcasm off>

There’s support information on the Transform Now website–basically the support is going through the Catholic Worker in Washington DC . The Disarm Now Plowshares maintain a permanent site for support for all Plowshares defendants.

Pax. Shalom. Salaam. Namaste.

UPDATE: the trial date for the Transform Now Plowshares has been moved to February 26, 2013.
